A great vocalist teams up with an equally fine pianist.

  • We Say...

Ella was 58, and not in her finest voice, when she recorded this duet session in 1975. There's the occasional crack and warble, but there's also such joy the flaws are easy to overlook. A few of the songs — especially "Mean to Me" and "How Long Has This Been Going On" — recall her peak years. Oscar Peterson could be glibly flamboyant in his solo work, but he toned down as an accompanist, and his work is particularly tasty here.

  • They Say...

For this Pablo set (reissued on CD), Ella Fitzgerald is heard on half of the program in duets with pianist Oscar Peterson and for the remainder in trios with Peterson and bassist Ray Brown. In general the performances are memorable (particularly "How Long Has This Been Going On," "More than You Know," "Midnight Sun" and "April in Paris") with the emphasis on ballads. Although her voice had slipped a little by this time, the results are still rewarding and swinging.
