A revved-up party at the end of the world

  • We Say...

In Elvis Perkins' universe, Doomsday sounds like a party. The big, boisterous thumping brass number that opens this EP was featured on Perkins' last record, but it stands just as well on its own as a seven martini party at the end of the world. Fittingly, Perkins pairs it with tracks that are a bit more subdued. It's title may imply horror, but "Stay Zombie Stay" is mostly melancholy, downbeat and sashaying. And "Stop Drop Rock and Roll" is as rockabilly as its title implies, a medium-cool cruise down a pitch-black highway in a drop-top Caddy. Perkins even throws in a slower version of the title track, offering a clue as to how it all might go down if the end of the world ends up being more somber than he originally anticipated.
