  • We Say...

Call him the Velvet Underground of classical music: many scholars tend to point to Dietrich Buxetehude (ca. 1637 – 1707) as one of the major influences on the work of Johann Sebastian Bach and one of the finest composers of the mid-Baroque period. His vocal compositions on Vocal Music, Vol. 1 are accompanied by a stately organ and two violinists, but the star here is soprano Emma Kirkby who charms her way over the album’s thirteen compositions. Voted Artist of the Year by Classic FM Radio listeners in 1999, Kirkby’s light touch complements the violins and organ beautifully.
