A master updates his classic catalog

  • We Say...

The most commanding blues-rock singer of the '60s British Invasion, Eric Burdon led the Animals — and, later, War — through tough guitar-organ based R&B and hard-tripping psychedelia. ("San Franciscan Nights" representing his lone ode to mellowness.) "House of the Rising Sun," "Monterey," "Spill the Wine" — Burdon landed knockout punches. These re-recordings remain faithful to the originals: guitars sharp, organ full-bodied and blustery. Burdon’s voice thins at the top end — he can’t quite grab "Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood" — but his growl is still menacing, as he proves with a worldly, swaggering read of the overlooked "When I Was Young."
