  • They Say...

During December of 1997, Jessica Bailiff traveled to Duluth, MN to record with Alan Sparhawk in Low's home studio, and Even in Silence is the rather amazing result -- the record frames Bailiff's delicated vocals with near-ambient floats and drones, spare percussion, and rich bass foundations. What's most amazing is the fact that the record tends more toward dreamy ambient swells than anything remotely singer/songwriter -its sweet, rich washes of sound are intensely captivating, and the presence of more traditional elements (i.e., the conventional drums, bass, guitar, and vocals) is handled so effectively that neither end ever dominates the other. Even in Silence is a thing of very fragile beauty, demonstrating that the combination of Bailiff with Sparhawk's general aesthetic is a very, very good thing.
