Sulk or pogo? Why not both?

  • We Say...

Formed out of the ashes of emo darlings Braid, Hey Mercedes was less complicated and more melodic, fusing melancholy and despondency with pop euphoria to create songs equally appropriate for sulking and pogoing. Hey Mercedes' 2001 full length debut, Everynight Fire Works, was produced by ex-Jawbox frontman J. Robbins, who captured the band's inner turmoil with giant swaths of distorted guitars, heavy crashing beats and arresting guitar hooks. But while songs like "The Frowning of a Lifetime" and "Our Weekend Stars on Wednesday" are as taut and cathartic as much of Robbins' own repertoire, Bob Nanna's vocals gives even the most aggressive material a pop sheen. The band's 2003 follow-up, Loses Control, was even more blatantly tuneful, but hardly as impacting.

  • They Say...

Hey Mercedes' Everynight Fire Works is an aggressive collection of guitar driven emo-rock tracks built upon melody and passion. Like their esteemed ancestors Husker Du, the Pixies, and Sugar, this quartet captures the fervor of a live performance in the studio. Hey Mercedes' clever two-guitar arrangements, which meld basic voicings with linear phrases, are supported by a solid rhythm section that turns the beat around when you least expect it. Punk/thrash influences abound in "Our Weekend Starts on Wednesday," while "Eleven to Your Seven" is a pop tune worthy of Cheap Trick's repertoire. "Haven't Been This Happy" stands as a song of hope to even the most jaded of shoegazers. Everynight Fire Works is a solid effort that should serve as a springboard for a band with a bright future.
