  • They Say...

Fight Like Apes work slowly. A year and a half lapsed between the release of their debut EP How Am I Supposed To Kill You If You Have All The Guns? and its FIFA Records successor David Carradine Is A Bounty Hunter Whos Robotic Arm Hates Your Crotch. Two things should be immediately clear reading the titles alone. First of all, Fight Like Apes don't care for conventional grammar rules. Secondly, Fight Like Apes don't care for traditional musical rules. They are an odd bunch, and it's clearly reflected in the guitar-less punk frenzy of their sophomore release. Led by the single "Do You Karate," a vigorous non-pop number that sees the group pit winding, post-disco synthesiser lines on top of sombre, New Order-influenced synths, David CarradineĀ… is urgent and disruptive for every one of its eleven minutes. Pixies-derived offering "Canhead" sees frontperson May Kay and cohort Pockets offer the sage words, "Goodness me! it's fish and chips," in tandem to the backdrop of frenetic marching band drums, while closer "Snore Bore Whore" swims in kitschy, "Tuesday's Gone"-like storybook keyboards. Brief though it is, David CarradineĀ… achieves exactly what an EP should do- leave the listener anticipating more- while keeping its cards held firmly to its chest.
