The Hep label has reissued some prime Fletcher Henderson from a three-year period that is very representative of his best work. Great soloists Coleman Hawkins and Henry "Red" Allen are quite noticeable here, and you hear a distinct progression as they play material ranging from goofier tunes such as "Sugar Foot Stomp" and "Radio Rhythm" to such classics as "King Porter Stomp," "Queer Notions," and "Nagasaki." The band was really hitting its stride by 1933, and the progression of its repertoire, exceptionally well reproduced on digital audio, is clearly evident on these 23 tracks that can easily be recommended to both novice and aficionado.
