  • They Say...

Teenbeat Records continued its annual compilation series with the 2002 version, which includes 23 tracks from indie rock luminaries as well as some fresh sounds from the renowned indie label. The disc begins with "Blue Again," a cover of the Louis Armstrong classic by Versus with Fontaine Toups on vocals. Currituck County is up next with "Variations on 'Colours,'" a revision of Donovan's "Colours." Other highlights on the disc include the stunning spoken word and restrained instrumentation of "Raise the Barrel" by the Pacific Ocean, the contemplative experimentation of "Outside" by Washington, D.C.'s Pocket Rockets, the retro-pop of the Rondelles' Juliet Swango on "Fussin'," and the acoustic grace of Que Verde's "Badly Drawn." The Sisterhood of Convulted Thinkers offer the atmospheric duet "Brown Door, Green Mat," the Long Goodbye are featured on the engaging "Porcelain Sin," and Flin Flon's "Mistassini" showcases Mark Robinson's steady and evocative vocals. Andrew Beaujon is featured on vocals on tha Cheeky Bastid's "For Gigi" and Air Miami's "Seabird," from 1995's Me, Me, Me, is remastered especially for the compilation. Versus rounds out the disc with "Blue Again," this time with Richard Baluyut on vocals. Yet again, the Teenbeat Sampler 2002 unveiled a flurry of thrilling sounds from Teenbeat Records, which shows no sign of slowing down after more than a decade of releasing uncompromising and sophisticated indie rock.
