  • We Say...

Fluke have been through the full life-cycle of electronic dance music, beginning with the late-'80s British acid-house scene, moving on to Ibiza-style ecstasy epics, with a stopover in the Gothic realms of industrial hardcore. Somebody in Hollywood must have been a Fluke fan, because they then landed on the soundtracks for both The Matrix: Reloaded and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Neither of those were little independent films, so the inevitable whispers of panic began among their fans: Is it over? Have Fluke sold electronica out? Puppy is Fluke's valentine of reassurance. They recorded the bulk of the album in 1999, but didn't release it in England until 2003 and even more recently in the States. It perfectly preserves the last audio year of the 20th century, but adds four years of fine glossy polish. Puppy is an aural tour of a bygone club scene seen through the dual prisms of experience and nostalgia. The album's many moods and textures flow together without seams: industrial clang gives way to dance party by way of interstellar journey, with lots of cool beeps and soundwaves along the way. Listening on headphones all the way through is a must.
