They Say...
With the advent of the first trustworthy recording equipment in the early '20s, folklorists raced across the American south in an effort to capture field recordings of what they recognized was a rapidly vanishing tradition: the black work song. Work songs were generally call and response affairs, with strategic pauses to allow workers to complete their tasks in unison. While several collections exist that capture the secular and proto-blues aspects of these songs, Negro Religious Field Recordings Vol. 2 focuses on the non-secular, showing the roots of what would eventually become known as gospel. The singing is generally fairly rough and unpolished, but with a strong rhythmic base, and it is easy to see how these elements formed the basis for the future of blues, gospel, and jazz, and by extension, the whole of American popular music. Sound quality is hit or miss here due to the recording technology of the day, making this a disc primarily for collectors and historians. The collection ends with several recordings by early gospel quartets.
