  • We Say...

After dismantling the beloved indiepop outfit Ciao Bella, Mario Hernandez formed From Bubblegum to Sky as his primary songwriting outlet. The names may have changed, but the song — thankfully — remains the same. Hernandez still writes bouncy, joyous pop songs that are proudly bubblegum both in name and in sound. "Operation Big Beat" moves from a sweet, plinking piano into full Technicolor power-pop in seconds flat, and the aptly-titled "The Gurls & Shoo Be Doo Wop" rockets along on handclap percussion and sweet shoop-shoop backing vocals. Hernandez's sunny pop may be an anachronism in 2006, but those with a sweet tooth for mid-60s sugar will find it hard to resist.
