  • They Say...

Contains their Westbound singles from 1969 to 1976, including Funkadelic's first significant single "I Bet You," co-written by George Clinton while under contract to Motown for five fruitless years. Motown never released it or any other Parliament song. Billy Butler's rendition of "I Bet You" preceded Funkadelic's stoner version. Guitars dominate every track, either as lead instruments or as electric wallpaper; Bernie Worrell's keyboard and synthesizer skills glue everything together. The erotic "I Wanna Know if It's Good for You" messes with your head for ten funky minutes. Worrell plays a multitude of keyboards on the musically happy "A Joyous Process." They emulate the Temptations on "You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure" by bouncing the lead around like a hot potato. "Red Hot Mama" scorches, "Hit It and Quit It" has an orgasmic, jerky beat. In-your-face openers "Let's Take It to the Stage" and "Get Off Your Ass & Jam" have been P-Funk concert staples for more than 25 years. "Cosmic Slop" and "Undisco Kidd" display a trend toward commercialism that crystallized and paid dividends on One Nation Under a Groove. A live version of "Maggot Brain" featuring guitarist Michael Hampton is a bonus.
