  • They Say...

In the wake of Gary U.S. Bonds' early-'80s comeback, Rhino Records released this compilation of singles he made between 1968 and 1970 for producer Jerry Williams, Jr.. Williams cast Bonds in the late-'60s soul style of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, which meant his voice was often a harsh bark and the music had a Memphis-style funkiness, complete with horns. Bonds handled the material well, but the music still doesn't compare either to his early-'60s hits or his early-'80s comeback material.
