  • They Say...

The second Geeez 'N' Gosh album by prolific and eccentric producer Uwe Schmidt follows the precedent established by its predecessor. Again, Schmidt interprets gospel music with a glitch-house style that feels somewhat ironic but, more importantly, awfully soulful and funky. Nobody Knows feels ironic because of the rhetoric used for the song titles and the sampled vocals. As odd as it may seem to anyone not familiar with the other Geeez 'N' Gosh releases, Schmidt really does raid gospel music for his music: the titles look authentic -- "Swing Down Sweet Chariot," "Mother Showed Me (The Way to Go)," "Oh, Precious Lord (I'm Thankful)" -- and the samples are of real gospel songs. Yet as instantly striking as this debatable irony may be, what remains on successive listens is the music itself. Schmidt has obviously mastered the glitch style by this point and pushes it to wild limits on this album, every song an onslaught of tiny sounds assembled into some truly creative rhythms that affect you in unexpected ways. Though Nobody Knows is anything but the traditional style of gospel house, it's just as evocative. You'll want to dance and you'll want to celebrate. Few glitch albums possess as much character as Nobody Knows, making Geeez 'N' Gosh one of Schmidt's more memorable projects.
