We Say...
Based on genre description alone, Nomo’s Afro-inspired, Nu-jazz, electronic style sounds like it should be a mess. But on Ghost Rock crisp, brassy horns slide over electric bass and beats in a way that is surprisingly natural, and gives way to a rich polyphonic and polyrhythmic sound. At times, the beauty is also in the breakdown, when more heavily-layered tracks devolve into the simpler drum beats and keyboard loops that serve as their backbone (“Ghost Rock,” “Last Beat,” “Three Shades”). The end result is a neat and tidy album that is seamless, but also imaginative – taking the listener through a complex groovy world, at times reminiscent of classic Afrobeat remastered, remixed, and reissued.
