Heartsick and beautiful honky tonk from a country legend

  • We Say...

Perhaps nowhere in American popular music has there been an artist who has so honestly expressed love of raucousness and hokum, God and piety, the joys of the highway and the torment of heartsickness and lost love as well as Hank Williams. His music is at once of its time and free from temporal considerations. Featuring the peerless Drifting Cowboys (there’s no way to overstate how central to the music’s success they are), the beautifully recorded Lovesick Blues traverses the complete range of a standard Williams set.

As it turns out, that range is vast; listening to the album is likely to turn you inside-out emotionally. Williams had a genius for getting to the heart of the matter in both his lyrics and singing. He moves stunningly from the honky tonk swagger of “I’m a Long Gone Daddy” to the desolate “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” The last-minute salvation song “I Saw the Light” cohabits comfortably with the cautionary “Lost Highway.”

There are surprises too: a marked blues influence shows up in the last verse of Hank’s singing during “There’ll Be No Teardrops Tonight.” He also throws in some terrific spoken intros: “If you don’t change, I’m gonna pack my suitcase and go home and live with mama.” Lovesick Blues provides 18 examples of how Hank Williams set the Gold Standard for country music.
