A whimsical sequel to Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

  • We Say...

While some composers dabble in pop styles, Christopher Rouse’s interest in rock is a lifelong passion that informs many of his works. He often favors sprawling, percussion- and brass-heavy orchestral scores that bear a certain similarity to '70s arena rock. And, like a lot of old-school heavy metal, Rouse’s music frequently deals with ancient mythology, as in his 1997 percussion concerto “Der Gerettete Alberich” (“Alberich Saved”). Conceived as a whimsical sequel to Wagner’s “Ring” cycle, the piece mixes quotations from the “Ring” with the pounding drumbeat of Led Zeppelin's “When the Levee Breaks.” Rouse even imagines the work’s namesake, Wagner’s greedy dwarf Alberich, as a rock drummer at one point, with a drum set solo. If the concept sounds gimmicky, it’s also a serious, dramatic work in the tradition of Mahler and Bruckner.
