Songs that may or may not help you save money on your car insurance.

  • We Say...

If you discovered Hem through a recent series of insurance ads that feature their music, this EP is a good place to start, as both its first and last tracks (“The Part Where You Let Go” and “Half Acre”) were used in those commercials. The latter tune dates back to the band’s 2001 debut Rabbit Songs, but “The Part Where You Let Go” is new, and instantly rates as one of the very best songs in the band’s catalogue. That’s also true for the title track, which embodies everything at which Hem excels: exquisite arrangements, emotionally charged melodies, and romantically reflective lyricism. It all soars high on the wings of singer Sally Ellyson’s sweet, spirited swoon, her voice aglow in the homesick heartache of the words. Elsewhere, “Half Asleep” and “The Meeting Place” (at 2:21 and 1:13, respectively) serve as purposefully brief vignettes of connective tissue. “While My Hand Was Letting Go” doesn’t quite live up to its evocative title, but everything else here is golden.
