They Say...
Jazz Moods: Twilight in Rio is another budget collection by the Concord label from its vast catalog. As such, it is a mixed bag in terms of diversity. There are no dodgy performances here, however, and as a mood-setting piece it fits the bill. The bookend pieces by Charlie Byrd, "Triste" and "Favela," are quite beautiful, as is "Águas de Março (Waters of March)" by pianist/composer Joanne Brackeen. Karrin Allyson's quirky French-language "Samba Saravah" is a nice surprise, as is Toots Thielemans' read of Bruno Brighetti and Bruno Martino's "Estaté." This is a nice little comp for the money.
