A masterpiece of texture, form and construction.

  • We Say...

It's hard to imagine Matthew Herbert ever having been either a cheesy raver or a snooty club kid — though he can come across as plenty snooty in his interviews, in which he promulgates ideas as irrepressibly utopian as the most smiley-faced dancer. But his feel for aural texture is as undeniable as they come. This 2001 album, Herbert's third under his birth name, is as cool and luxurious as stay-at-home house music has gotten. Manipulating an uncountable number of samples of exactly what the title implies (fingernails scratching skin, sniffling, blood running through veins, like that), Herbert concocts inviting grooves that augment the dry croon of American-born singer Dani Siciliano, a match made in headphone heaven. Pick to click: "Suddenly," which some nu-jazz siren ought to cover right now.
