Ex-Promise Ringer Davey Von Bohlen has been busy running from his emo past ever since the release of his former group's mature and underrated final album wood/water. Von Bohlen continues to flee on Heresy and the Hotel Choir, opting for a polished indie sound that does few favors for Von Bohlen's notoriously warbly voice. But that warbly voice is, as always, the show. Whether he's straining to reach the high notes or singing comfortable within his limited range, he's rarely not imparting some piece of wisdom. And when it's backed up by newly installed bassist Justin Klug's stolid runs, what could be better for the post-emo soul?
