A snapshot of how minimal fits into the larger framework of Berlin techno.

  • We Say...

Sven Väth isn’t the first name an early-’90s raver might immediately associate with minimal techno — back then, he made some of the most rococo, prog-rocky albums associated with dance music. But his Cocoon imprint often delivers some of the smartest glitch-dance around. The fifth collection of the label’s wares isn’t all minimal, but that’s one reason it’s interesting: In addition to the squelchy likes of Phonique’s “Getting Closer” and Dominik Eulberg’s “Potzblitz & Donnerwetter,” Cocoon Compilation E works as a snapshot of how minimal fits into the larger framework of Berlin techno, with nods to electro (Hell’s “Jack My Body”) to acid (Pascal FEOS’s “Ausklang,” Väth vs. Rother’s “Magie”).
