  • They Say...

In one of their most compact and structured releases, with 16 songs in under 45 minutes, Elf: Gulf Bore Waltz is a generally straightforward, standard lo-fi album. That's not to say that there isn't a fair amount of experimentation going on, with "Out," which sounds something like Bo Diddley playing lead guitar on a mutated version of the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," as well as the sparkling atmospheric textures of "Gallup." The generally hazy production benefits from up front vocals, emphasized drumming, as well as the usual mix of pianos, synths, and acoustic guitars. The dizzying time changes of the classic era art rock of "Wicked Ember Waltz" is perfectly complimented by the acid-funk groove of "I Can Rely" and climaxing Pavement-esque rock of "Summertime." Realistically, this could be the most easily accessible Home album, in that it boasts enough pop hooks to satisfy those who don't like eight-minute epics and maintains the progressive edge to hold the interest of those who do.
