They Say...
Cleopatra's Kiss the Night: A Collection of Unusual Gothic Love Songs is indeed unusual because for the most part, it avoids the heavy, industrial-inspired sound that has influenced some recent music considered gothic. Human Drama's "About Michelle," Stun Gun's "Pretty Pictures (Nicole's Song)," and Audra's "Don't End This Time" are certainly dark, but hew closer to the more melodic origins of the style. Element's "Gestapo Tactics," Wreckage's "Dancing With Katrina," and Sex With Lurch's "So Many Questions" are similarly restrained, although they add more electronic elements. Indeed, aside from Fear Cult's rather oppressive "She Loves Me Not," Kiss the Night is a fittingly brooding, swooning affair. It may not be the best collection of gothic music available, but it's much more listenable than might be expected.
