What might just be some of the oldest and most sonically sophisticated recorded languages on the planet.

  • We Say...

Frank Watlington made this record while he was working for the US Navy off the coast of Bermuda. It was there, while listening intently for the hum of approaching Russian subs, that he was seduced by the songs of the Humpback whale. These are the cries of males, sending out mating calls to the female of the species. They vary in pitch and frequency, sometimes sounding a sense of urgency, other times simply a low and slow, almost guttural, moan. These might be some of the oldest and most sonically sophisticated recorded languages on the planet. Unlike Kamal (whose music and work I really like) and others who incorporate whale song into musical pieces, these are unadulterated, pure field recordings. Some people find whale sounds to be completely disturbing, but I find their cries haunting and primal — the ancient sound of a fellow mammalian that reminds us of nature and our often abstract relationship to it.
