  • We Say...

As the lead singer for Mott the Hopple, Ian Hunter (with the considerable help of David Bowie) led the band to a string of hit albums in the early ‘70s. Soon after Mick Ralphs left the group to form Bad Company, though, things began to fall apart and Hunter went solo. Flash forward more than thirty years and we find ourselves with Shrunken Heads, a celebration of a lengthy and successful career in a way that Hunter would: by composing all the music himself. Too often, Hunter has crafted his signature tunes using the words of other songwriters, but who else would have the guts to pen a song entitled “I Am What I Hated When I Was Young” these days? Hunter doesn’t just turn the ire inward, however. The shrunken heads refer to a number of world leaders, the mishandling of the response to Hurricane Katrina and the state of the modern world in general are all taken to task throughout. In fact, Hunter is so full of life that you get the sense that, at the age of 68, he just might be getting started. Bring it on.
