High-concept indie-pop with a mesmerizing groove

We Say...
Unrest were American indie-rock's deepest groove band and cleverest conceptualists. Their 1992 breakthrough album shows off their range, alternating between explosions of hyperspeed strum-and-rattle horniness ("Cherry Cream On," "Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl"), delicate acoustic mantras, and spiraling instrumental drone-and-pulse experiments. (It also introduced bassist Bridget Cross, who sings a heartbreaker called "June.") Every song hits a perfect, climactic tone straight off, and stays there for two minutes or eight or fourteen; it's no accident that singer/guitarist Mark Robinson's favorite lyrical subject here is sex.

They Say...
Imperial is Unrest's full-length debut. It fleshes out the pop promise of their early singles, and expands on their pop and experimental background as well. "I Do Believe You Are Blushing," "Cherry Cream On," "Suki," "Isabel," and "June" are still some of the band's best songs, mixing high-energy guitars and subjects like girls and death to infectious effect. A near-perfect album of indie pop.
