A collection that may not be as strong as it predecessors, but still full of overlooked gems.

  • We Say...

Unlike the first two Stax single sets, The Complete Stax Volt Singles Vol 3: 1972-1975 is definitely a case of diminishing returns; the final discs are so thin on actual chart hits, you can pretty much hear the debt collectors pounding on the front door. But there’s still a heapin’ helpin’ of dynamite music on it, especially on Vol 3’s first few discs. Disc 1 features some of the label’s biggest hits from 1972 — including the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There,” the Soul Children’s “Hearsay” and Frederick Knight’s “I’ve Been Lonely For So Long” — alongside such overlooked gems as Hot Sauce’s “Bring It Home (And Give It to Me),” Jean Knight’s “Carry On” and Sons of Slum’s black power classic “Right On.”
