A hook-laden, spring reverb-doused record spiced with Afrobeat, Krautrock and Tropicalia flavours

Jack Peñate's 2007 debut Matinee may have gone top ten in the UK, but in the interim Peñate's best friend Adele won two Grammys. The gauntlet is certainly thrown, then, and that accomplishment — coupled with the kind of work ethic one wouldn't necessarily expect of a youngster from well-heeled Blackheath, South London — might account for Peñate's swift mastery of the learning curve. Everything Is New makes good on the 24-year-old's desire to make a daisy fresh-sounding record of some integrity. Working first with Norman 'Fatboy Slim' Cook, then at greater length with Bloc Party/Friendly Fires producer Paul Epworth, Peñate has hatched an itch-scratching, hook-laden, spring reverb-doused record judiciously spiced with Afrobeat, Krautrock and Tropicalia flavours. The overriding impression is of a fertile imagination running riot, Peñate essaying glistening, flawless 'world pop' on "So Near" and drawing inspiration from a joyous New Orleans funeral march on "Let's All Die."

"I called it Matinee because that's the kid's show," the singer recently said of his debut. Extending that analogy, "Everything Is New" is Peñate's grown-up main feature. Succinct, inspired and immediate, it marshals its exotic ingredients and chant-along choruses to floor-filling effect.
