An 11-song wild ride pumped full of over-excited hormones.

  • We Say...

Composed by a 22–year-old who looks like a young George Michael and dances like Jerry Lee Lewis on ten Red Bulls, Matinee is packed with deceivingly simple pop textures that re-arrange, rather than burn, the pop rock rulebook.

Everything about Jack Penate’s debut album screams youthful optimism. From its jangly, three-chord, rockabilly pop shots, to its heartfelt downtempo ballads, Matinée is the type of record that will make everyone between the ages of five and seventy-five break into a huge goofy smile.

Beginning with the bouncy skiffle guitar riff of “Spit at Stars,” one of the four songs that marked him out as the prime contender to follow Lily Allen out of the MySpace bubble, Matinée progresses at a breakneck pace for just under 40 minutes. Citing the Boo Radleys (“Made of Codes”), the acid jazz of the Brand New Heavies (“Got My Favourite”) and the Beach Boys’ surf boogie (“Second Minute Hour”), the young Londoner’s charisma is impossible to ignore.

While Jack’s yelps and sunny disposition momentarily disappear in favour of grim introspection for the finale (“When We Die”), that's not enough to damage Matinée’s overwhelming positive vibes. A strong contender for the feel-good album of 2007, Matinée is an 11-song wild ride pumped full of over-excited hormones.
