Taylor brings his wistful, sunny vibe to a new batch of favorites
-
We Say...
The brief sequel to James Taylor's 2008 album Covers doesn't break any new ground, but then that's hardly the point. Rather than mining for obscure gems or trying to change the way we hear familiar songs, Taylor sounds as if he's just having a good time in the studio, taking a spin though his favorite neighborhoods with his touring band and a few friends in tow. The results are never less than pleasant, although it's doubtful fans of either Tom Waits or Bette Midler will find Taylor's easygoing take on "Shiver Me Timbers" sufficiently dramatic. But a lack of drama is Taylor's stock in trade, the wistful, sunny approach he brings to "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'" (from the musical Oklahoma!) and the doo-wop classic "Get a Job," whose closing banter suggests Taylor and friends may have been having just a bit too much fun around the microphone. The closing Memphis soul medley of "In the Midnight Hour" and "Knock on Wood" edges close to wedding-band territory, but you can't accuse Taylor of falling into the over-singing trap that snares so many would-be soul singers. Chances are if you like Taylor's brand of mellowness, you'll like this as well.
