Dazzling violin showpieces born in Hollywood, played by the genius who inspired them

  • We Say...

In 1945 Erich Korngold, at the climax of a brilliant career as one of Warner Bros.' house composers, wrote a concerto for Jascha Heifetz, taking full advantage of the violinist's gifts — his uniquely sweet and plangent tone and his flawless technical precision — basing it on earlier film scores. Joining the gloriously splashy (and astonishingly difficult) concerto on this disc are three other showpieces, with Hollywood connections, written for Heifetz: Franz Waxman's over-the-top potpourri on melodies from the opera Carmen (composed especially for the Joan Crawford musical melodrama Humoresque), and two works by prolific film-scorer Miklos Rozsa.
