They Say...
16 Thrillers from the Killer is a hodge-podge of live tracks and rough studio cuts -- nothing on it is particularly rare, but it in true Jerry Lee Lewis fashion, nothing is sedate. The Killer refuels "Chantilly Lace" with his own brand of sleaze, while a stumbling version of "Your Cheatin' Heart" features a nice passage playing Lewis' piano trills off a sawing fiddle. Rowdy versions of both "Johnny B. Goode" and "Whole Lot of Shakin' Goin' On" close out the set. His take on the latter -- as well as his other signature tune, "Great Balls of Fire" -- prove that 40 years on, Jerry Lee Lewis is still his own man and a consummate performer. The fidelity here suffers throughout, and 16 Thrillers from the Killer is definitely not the album to start your Lewis collection with. But for aficionados, it's another valuable portrait of the Killer in action.
