They Say...
The second volume in Legacy's Miles Davis Love Songs collection centers on material recorded between 1956 with his John Coltrane/Red Garland quintet and 1964 with his Herbie Hancock/Tony Williams band with Ron Carter and George Coleman ("Baby Won't You Please Come Home" from Seven Steps to Heaven, and "There Is No Greater Love" from The Complete Concert: 1964). Along the way there are five stunning outings with the Gil Evans Orchestra that include "My Man's Gone Now" and "Bess, You Is My Woman Now" from Porgy and Bess. The other Evans tunes are from Quiet Nights -- "Once Upon a Summertime" and "Wait Till You See Her" -- and Miles Ahead: "I Don't Wanna Be Kissed (By Anyone but You)." There are two tracks from Davis' later career, including his now signature reading of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" from You're Under Arrest and the most moving rendition of "Love for Sale" ever recorded by his Coltrane/Cannonball/Evans/Chambers quintet from 1958 and issued previously only on the Miles/Coltrane box set. Essentially, as repackages go, especially those constructed along thematic lines, both volumes in this series are unbeatable. There is a range of emotion in Davis' interpretations of these classics, and with the different bands showcased along the way, no two sound the same, thereby getting away from sets organized around particular bands or periods. This set shows a range not only in the love songs the Davis bands recorded, but in the bands themselves, and is therefore a welcome addition to the catalog.
