  • They Say...

Any sucker for sounds-like-Neil Young-vocals will enjoy Jeff Klindt's delivery on "Fresno," "Big Timber" and a couple of the other Young-reliant tracks on this San Joaquin Valley, CA band's debut. Yet, on the Youngian "Last of the Cut-n-Pasters," our fellow is singing about being a paste-up artist, and you just know this is stuff Neil would never touch. Joaquina's funny, though that may not be the intent, but eminently likable. The acoustic guitar, bass and drums fill up the space aplenty -- it's not spare at all, especially because the songs are so lyric-intensive. "Child Star," an outstanding alterna-acoustic song, has that same pathetic-rock ring as the best of Pavement and Beck.
