The wild, wooly sound of New Orleans creole
-
We Say...
This is a wild and woolly collection. New Orleans was a recording mecca during the '50s, producing huge national hits by such rock and R&B pioneers as Little Richard, Lloyd Price and Fats Domino. But the real story was the steady stream of regional and secondary R&B hits it produced, many of them by players native to the Crescent City's fertile music scene. And while there were certainly hits on local labels like Jewel and Paula, New Orleans also held a special attractions for labels like New York's Atlantic and Los Angeles' Imperial and Specialty. These two collections offer up a superb sampling of New Orleans music of the '50s, from the blues of Guitar Slim to the Zydeco of Clifton Chenier — but the real emphasis is placed firmly in the city's peerless R&B scene.
This 26-track collection aptly kicks off with Joe Liggins' anthemic "Going Back to New Orleans" before moving on to several selections from vocalist and bandleader Lloyd Price (including his big hit "Lawdy Miss Clawdy") and Crescent City piano godfather Professor Longhair. There's also Guitar Slim's signature song, "The Things That I Used to Do," and two offerings from a very young Art Neville. The collection's best rediscoveries, however, are the two tracks from R&B howler Larry Williams, "Jockamo" and "Bad Boy" (the latter covered by the Beatles), as well as Jerry Byrnes' rollicking "Lights Out." Two tracks by singer/songwriter Percy Mayfield are an added bonus. -
They Say...
Creole Kings of New Orleans is a splendid 26-track sampler of Specialty Records' numerous R&B legends, including Professor Longhair, Percy Mayfield, Lloyd Price, Joe Liggins, and Guitar Slim. Although only a couple of big hits are included, the material is consistently strong, making the disc an excellent purchase.
