  • They Say...

The title track of this EP also appears on 1997's Blue Mountains, and fits well with the acoustic shuffle of that album The other seven songs on I'll Burn, however, move in a very different direction. All are built from odd organ tones, over which a single melody moves (both on organ and vocals) -- a sound that's extremely interesting, but depends heavily on the quality of Davis' songwriting. When things truly work, as on "Automatic as Apples," it's as if an entirely new pop vein has been unearthed. On the occasional track where things don't work, there's not much to enjoy.
