  • They Say...

There's 18 zillion John Lee Hooker CDs out there in any mall record shop you go into these days, but this is the one you want. The earliest, the crudest, the dirtiest, the best, these are the ones that made Hooker's bad gunslinger rep. For solo work, Hooker's one of the very baddest there is, and here's a heavy dosage of his best. All cut in Detroit at United Sound and assorted backroom "studios" for Bernie Bessman and Joe Von Battle between 1948-1954, the lineup features Hooker's original hits "Boogie Chillen," "Crawling Kingsnake," "I'm in the Mood," "Drifting from Door to Door," "Queen Bee," and "Howlin' Wolf." With a generous 24 tracks in all, this also features the best sound restoration you could possibly ask for and for once, the correct takes of everything! No, Carlos Santana and Sting aren't on here as guests, but believe me, if you're just starting up your John Lee Hooker collection, this is not only the perfect introduction, but an essential piece to building the perfect blues collection as well.
