Kato Hideki has some impressive help on this release -- among them Zeena Parkins and John Zorn. The music flows from deconstruction and soundbites to broken Asian percussion to jazzy bass grooves. Hypnotic and abandoned, Hope & Despair is a disembodied tone poem of the forgotten but still remembering. This is an ambient jazz experiment in broad-stroked moods.
