Released shortly after the popularity of the major American film bearing the same title, Walk the Line is an excellent two-CD collection of Johnny Cash's early Sun Records recordings, which include a few of the major hits of his career. Though Cash's name is synonymous with country music, Walk the Line presents his rockabilly history on 56 tracks he recorded with for Sam Phillips' legendary record company. Besides the extensive compilation, Walk the Line also boasts handsome packaging as well as a detailed description of Cash's life and career. Highlights include a variety of Hank Williams covers, a fantastic version of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line," and Cash's own driving rockabilly number "Big River," along with Cash's more well-known hits, "Folsom Prison Blues," "Cry, Cry, Cry," and "Get Rhythm" as well as others. Walk the Line probably isn't the album for listeners just starting to delve into Cash's extensive catalog (they would likely be better suited with one of the many one-disc greatest-hits compilations, or At Folsom Prison). But for Cash fanatics who can't seem to get enough of his recordings, Walk the Line provides for a fantastic, well-constructed, nostalgic listening experience.
