  • They Say...

A double-album-length potted history/reconstruction of the most vibrant era in Brazilian music -- roughly from the birth of bossa nova through the petering out of Tropicalia, or the late '50s through the early '70s -- Uma Tarde Na Fruteira is singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jupiter Apple's tribute to his homeland's musical heritage. There are sardonic aspects; "Act Not Surprised" is a positively dead-on re-creation of Stereolab's late-'90s homages to Brazilian music, right down to the Motorik beat and female "ba-ba-ba" backing vocals, and "Collectors Inside Collection" seems to gently mock the very concept of the Braziliana fetish. But elsewhere, the homages to Os Mutantes (the outstanding "Metropole"), Antonio Carlos Jobim, Gal Costa and other musical heavyweights are winsomely sincere, and none of these 17 songs are anything less than richly melodic and instantly memorable. Highly recommended for fans of vintage Brazilian pop and its many offshoots.
