As part of its celebration of ten years in business, the Six Degrees label put together this 11-track compilation of particularly funky and dancefloor-friendly album tracks and remixes from its back catalog. Few labels have done as much as Six Degrees to blow the dust of academic earnestness off of world music and make a wide variety of musical traditions easily accessible to the masses. Realizing early on that funky beats were key, the label's organizers focused on modern pop and club music from around the world, and this compilation presents an excellent cross-section of its releases, from Transglobal Underground's remix of DJ Cheb i Sabbah's "Kese Kese" to Adham Shaikh's chugging take on the Malian boogie of Issa Bagayogo's "Ciew Mawele" and a reggaeton mix of Los Mocosos' "Bandolera Era." Such usual suspects as Karsh Kale, Bombay Dub Orchestra, and MIDIval PunditZ are all represented here, of course, but so are lower-profile names like Batidos (with a dubby Ron Trent mix of "Tengo Sed") and the always brilliant Shrift ("To the Floor [Outrun Mix]"). This album stands well on its own, but for best results, let it lead you deeper into the back catalog of this remarkable label.
