  • We Say...

The Langley Schools Music Project was a group of elementary school children recorded during the mid-‘70s doing covers of recent pop hits from the likes of David Bowie and the Beach Boys. Taking advantage of the low-cost custom vinyl plants that popped up during that time period, Langley and other schools cut records to sell to school administrators, parents and anyone else interested in charmingly amateur pop music.

The Kashmere Stage Band was one of these groups. But its music was anything but amateur. Conrad Johnson, the school’s music teacher, treated his charges like professionals, training them to become the best stage band the world had ever seen. Johnson, who wrote most of the group’s arrangements, pushed his students harder – and ended up getting more out of them. (The group won several national championships for high school bands.) In listening to Texas Thunder Soul: 1968-1974, you’d be hard-pressed to tell the difference between this group of teenagers and some of the finest jazzy funk bands around.

Simply listen to “Zero Pt. 1 & Pt. 2 (45 Version)” for proof. When was the last time you heard a group of kids exercise restraint when playing music? Here, the band gracefully takes turns with their soloing – giving each member time to shine. Sharing may be the first thing you learn when you get to elementary school, but rarely is it exemplified so beautifully.
