They Say...
Sure, you've heard most of it before, and some of the players surrounding Ory for these live broadcasts are hardly household names. Still, there is some very fine New Orleans-style music to be found on this disc, as well as some classic Kid Ory. The CD includes five bonus tracks, including the excellent "Blues for Jimmy Noone" and a riveting "Sugar Blues." As critic Max Harrison notes in the liners, the trombonist was able to inspire even lesser-known colleagues to produce tight ensemble work and strong solos. Ory favored a well-disciplined sound rather than a freewheeling Dixie style, but he let loose on the improvisations. Standouts include Teddy Buckner on trumpet, Joe Darensbourg and Bob McCracken on clarinet, and Don Ewell on piano but, as with much of what Ory recorded, there is a consistently high quality throughout from everyone in his groups. You cannot help but marvel at the slide slurs, the lip control, the growls, and the trombonist's big gutsy tone even though they are nothing that he hasn't done many times before. The generous recording time and the surprisingly high sound quality are plusses. While the trombonist has recorded with better (and better-known) groups, this is nonetheless a fine display of vintage Ory.
