The Kidz Bop Kids love pop music because the radio is fun, they like to sing along and they wanna be famous. Which, arguably, puts the young 'uns and pop stars on equal footing. Kidzbop 6 is current Top 40 karaoke as performed by children of indeterminate age, and the latest collection includes songs that fall into three not-so-distinct varieties: someone presses play on a CD and the kids holler along (Switchfoot's "Meant to Live"); rights prevent them from using the original recording so they echo a ProTooled cover (Britney's "Toxic," Maroon 5's "This Love"); the "kidz" sound like 40-year-old lounge singerz (Sean Paul's "I'm Still In Love With You"). The Kidz Bop Kids sing in unison, their voices eagerly climbing atop one another for hooks and shout-alongs. The KBK version of Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" easily bests the original: in the verses they count "one, two, three" like gleeful showoffs; in the chorus they yelp "but you were with another boy" with a finger wag that's practically audible; and the rest sounds like a snow-day playground. If you're looking for future Justins and Britneys lurking in this bunch, best of luck: label Razor & Tie doesn't even have a promo shot on its site, perhaps suggesting that "Kidz Bop" is the new "sweatshop." If only the Langley School had a street team.
