  • They Say...

Ben Barnett is one of those crooners, like Elliott Smith or Conor Oberst, who is full of stories about things that are most likely just as tragic as everyone else's life, but he just puts it to song and makes it sound really dark and depressing (for the most part). This self-titled ten-song release is a solo project for Barnett, with the material consisting primarily of early material, re-recorded. While initial listens may betray a weakness in Kind of Like Spitting's armor of disparaging sound by seeming to lack the fullness that the entire band brings with it, further attention will show the depth of Barnett's lyrics -- his sadness and his ability to make it all into a cohesive, yet stripped piece of work. With a Braid cover song and brilliant imagery, Kind of Like Spitting seems to be on the edge of something big here.
