The former leader of Azure Ray drops her most confident and impressive record yet

  • We Say...

Maria Taylor's rise beyond the indie ranks has been coming for some time now; after a couple solo releases on Saddle Creek following the split of her band Azure Ray, she now moves to Nettwerk for the most confident and impressive record of her career. This is acoustically centered music, but not really folk, per se; Taylor draws upon various other touchstones, from indie-rock to jazz to electronica and even a touch of country. Most notably on LadyLuck, she also expands the instrumentation; strings are more prevalent, and the opening title track includes exquisite accents of woodwinds as well. "Time Lapse Lifeline" uses repetitive musical and lyrical phrases to cast a rhythmic spell; it's fully fleshed out here, a rewarding realization of an acoustic-sketch version which appeared on last year's digital EP Savannah Drive. Best of all is "100,000 Times," which swells and sways and soars on multilayered vocals that convey both desperation and release. By the time R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe shows up on the brilliant Buddy Holly-esque closer "Cartoons And Forever Plans," Tayor has already left her mark, so vividly that it's fair to suggest Stipe is the one really benefiting from the guest appearance.
