  • They Say...

The bedtime entry in Music for Little People's series of Child's Celebration samplers is predictably becalmed and characteristically diverse. For the most part, the label licensed material from elsewhere, and if the mood and tempos are consistent, the artist lineup ranges from the Grateful Dead to Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, or at least from the Dead's Jerry Garcia playing an acoustic guitar with mandolinist David Grisman on "A Shenandoah Lullaby" to Regis Philbin's partner Kathie Lee Gifford crooning Kenny Loggins' "Cody's Song" to her child of the same name. You will also find the South African choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo, classic pop chanteuse Lena Horne (whose name is misspelled three times on the label copy), and Beach Boy Brian Wilson working with partner Van Dyke Parks. Many of the performers, however, are folkies to one degree or another -- Raffi, the Roches, Maria Muldaur, Taj Mahal, Eric Bibb -- with a few light popsters thrown in -- Harry Nilsson and Linda Ronstadt with Aaron Neville. The result is a varied set even within the theme. And unlike some other recent children's collections, this one actually can help put children to sleep.
