LP's new LP a first-class throwback to the era he helped pioneer

  • We Say...

Before there was El-P, there was LP: Large Professor — or Large Pro, the name he goes by on his third solo CD, Main Source. That title shouts out Pro's groundbreaking early '90s New York group of the same name; since then, LP has gone on to quietly make his mark on underground hip-hop as an innovative producer, mentoring DJ Premier and working with everyone from Eric B. & Rakim to Nas and Pete Rock. He has also come of age as an emcee — witness tracks like his MF Grimm collaboration "United." Main Source is a nostalgic throwback to the boom-bap sound of the '90s — which LP helped pioneer, by the way — and is filled with breezy, backyard beats. He's in his element on simple guitar-and-bass backed like "Frantic Barz" and "Sewin' Love," though the spacey, textured "The Hardest" — featuring Styles P and AZ — is a highlight as well. His flow isn't always as nice as his beats. "Hardcore Hip Hop," co-produced by Marco Polo, sees him scrambling to keep up with the deliciously nimble beat. Still, it's rare that anything with Large Pro's name on it disappoints, and putting on Main Source feels like slipping into your favorite t-shirt from high school — the one you'd forgotten in the back of your closet but, lo and behold, still fits perfectly.
